"Turn the Folio" is a song originally recorded by Bob Seger in 1972 and released on his Back in '72 anthology in 1973. It was not released equally a single,[1] until Seger'due south live version of the song on the 1976 Live Bullet album got released in Germany and the United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland. Inspiration [edit]
"Turn the Page" is about the emotional and social ups and downs of a rock musician'south life on the road. Seger wrote it in 1972 while touring with Teegarden & Van Winkle. Drummer David Teegarden (of Teegarden & Van Winkle and afterwards the Silver Bullet Band) recalls:
Nosotros had been playing somewhere in the Midwest, or the northern reaches, on our manner to Due north or Due south Dakota. [Guitarist] Mike Bruce was with united states. We'd been traveling all night from the Detroit area to make this gig, driving in this blinding snowstorm. It was probably 3 in the morning. Mike decided it was time to become gas. He was slowing down to go out the interstate and spied a truck stop. We all had very long hair dorsum so – it was the hippie era – but Skip, Mike and Bob had all blimp their hair up in their hats. Y'all had to be careful out on the road like that, considering you lot'd get ostracized. When I walked in, in that location was this gauntlet of truckers making comments – "Is that a girl or man?" I was seething; those guys were laughing their asses off, a big funny joke. That next night, later we played our gig – I think it was Mitchell, Due south.D. – Seger says, "Hey, I've been working on this song for a scrap, I've got this new line for information technology. He played information technology on acoustic guitar, and there was that line: "Oh, the aforementioned former cliches / 'Is that a woman or a human being?' " It was "Plow the Page."[2]
Tom Weschler, and then road manager for Seger, remembers the same incident:
"Plow the Page," Bob'due south not bad route song, came forth in '72, while we were driving home from a gig. I recollect we were in Dubuque, Iowa, in winter and stopped at a restaurant. We stood out when nosotros entered a shop or a gas station or a restaurant en masse. At this eating house it was especially bright within, so there weren't any night corners to hide in. All these local guys were looking at the states similar, "What are these guys? Is that a adult female or a man?" – merely like in the song. ... That was one incident, but there were so many others on the road that led Seger to write that song.[3]
While on bout in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on November xvi, 2006, promoting his 16th studio album Face the Promise, Seger said he wrote the song in a hotel room in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.[4] [5]
Instrumentation [edit]
Both Seger'south studio and live versions of "Plow the Page" characteristic a Mellotron and a saxophone part played past founding Silvery Bullet member Alto Reed. Tom Weschler allegedly helped inspire Reed to create the opening tune. During recording, Weschler told Reed: "Alto, think about it like this: Yous're in New York City, on the Bowery. It'southward three a.yard. You're under a streetlamp. There'southward a light mist coming downwardly. You're all past yourself. Testify me what that sounds like." With that, Reed played the opening melody to "Plow the Folio".[3]

In 2014, Seger performed the song on CMT Crossroads with state vocalist Jason Aldean. The video of the performance won the CMT Music Laurels for Functioning Video of the Twelvemonth.[29]
